À propos de ce matériau

Most load-bearing walls require a double top plate for structural continuity. The first top plate sits directly on the stud ends, and the second plate (cap plate) is nailed on top with joints offset by at least 4 feet from the first plate's joints. The cap plate ties intersecting walls together at corners and T-intersections by lapping over the adjoining wall's top plate. Top plates match the stud width — 2x4 or 2x6 — and are cut from the same lumber stock. Since a double top plate is required, you need twice the linear footage of plates compared to the total wall length. Longer boards (12 or 16 feet) are preferred to minimize joints. In advanced framing (OVE), a single top plate is permitted when studs, joists, and rafters stack directly above each other, but this requires careful layout coordination. Top plate lumber costs the same as stud lumber — $3 to $10 per board depending on size and length.

Conseils de pose

  • Offset joints in the cap plate from joints in the first top plate by at least 4 feet.
  • Tie corners together with the cap plate for structural rigidity.
  • Nail cap plate with 16d nails staggered every 16".

Erreurs courantes à éviter

  • Aligning cap plate joints directly over first plate joints — weakens the wall.
  • Not lapping the cap plate at corners.
