À propos de ce matériau
A gable roof is the most common residential roof type in North America, featuring two sloped sides that meet at a central ridge running the full length of the building. The triangular wall sections at each end — the gable ends — give this roof style its name. Gable roofs are popular because they are simple to design, straightforward to frame, economical on materials, and provide excellent rain and snow shedding. The two opposing slopes create natural ventilation when combined with soffit and ridge vents, keeping the attic cool and dry. Standard residential gable roofs use pitches from 4/12 to 8/12, with 6/12 being the most common. Rafters run from the top plate of the wall to the ridge board, with a bird's mouth cut at the wall plate and a plumb cut at the ridge. Common rafter sizes are 2x6 (up to 10 ft run), 2x8 (up to 13 ft), 2x10 (up to 16 ft), and 2x12 (up to 20 ft) at 16-inch on-center spacing, depending on species, grade, and load conditions. The gable end walls must be sheathed and sided, which adds material beyond the roof itself. Gable end areas are often forgotten when estimating siding and sheathing. For a 30x40 ft gable roof at 6/12 pitch, framing lumber typically costs $2,500 to $5,000, with labor adding $3,500 to $7,000 for professional installation.
Conseils de pose
- •Cut a pattern rafter first and test-fit before cutting the full set.
- •Use a speed square to mark consistent bird's mouth and plumb cuts.
- •Install the ridge board on temporary supports before setting rafters.
- •Work from both ends toward the center when setting opposing rafter pairs.
- •Install collar ties in the upper third of the rafters to prevent wall spread.
Erreurs courantes à éviter
- Forgetting to add overhang length to the rafter measurement — add 12 to 24 inches per rafter beyond the wall.
- Not including gable end sheathing and siding in the material estimate.
- Using the building width as the rafter run — the run is half the width for each side.
- Omitting collar ties or ceiling joists — without them the rafters will push the walls outward over time.
