À propos de ce matériau
Dimensional lumber is the backbone of residential wood-frame construction in North America. Standard sizes like 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12 are milled from softwood species — primarily spruce, pine, and fir (SPF) — and graded for structural use. The actual dimensions of a 2x4 are 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches after surfacing and drying, and standard lengths run 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet. Lumber is sold by the piece at retail home centers and by the thousand board feet (MBF) at wholesale lumberyards. Prices vary significantly by region, species, grade, and market conditions — the 2021-2022 lumber price spike saw 2x4x8 studs reach $12 or more per board, compared to the historical average of $3 to $5. When estimating lumber costs, always add 10-15% for waste, defective boards, and cutting losses. Pressure-treated lumber for ground contact or exterior use costs 50-100% more than untreated SPF. For structural applications, specify the correct grade (No. 2 and Better is standard for most framing) and verify the moisture content is appropriate for your climate. Lumber is typically stocked at nominal 15% MC (KD-HT) for interior framing use.
Étapes suivantes :
Conseils de pose
- •Inspect every board for crown, twist, and splits before installing.
- •Install boards crown-up for joists and rafters.
- •Pre-drill near board ends to prevent splitting.
- •Store lumber flat and off the ground, covered to prevent warping.
Erreurs courantes à éviter
- Not accounting for waste — always add 10-15% to your total order.
- Confusing nominal and actual dimensions (a 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5").
- Buying green (wet) lumber for finish applications — it will shrink and warp.
- Not price-comparing between home centers and local lumberyards.
