À propos de ce matériau

Pressure-treated (PT) sill plates are the lowest horizontal wood member of the wall framing, bolted directly to the concrete foundation. The preservative treatment (ACQ, CA-B, or micronized copper) resists rot, fungal decay, and insect damage from ground contact and moisture exposure. Standard sill plate sizes are 2x6 and 2x8, matching the wall framing width. Lumber should be rated UC4A or UC4B (Use Category 4) for ground contact applications. Common board lengths are 8, 12, and 16 feet, with longer boards reducing the number of joints. Always use PT-compatible fasteners (hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel, or silicon bronze) since the copper in modern treatments corrodes standard steel hardware. Sill plates cost roughly $8 to $16 per 8-foot board depending on region and lumber prices. In some jurisdictions, engineered composite sill plates are permitted as an alternative to pressure-treated lumber.

Conseils de pose

  • Use ACQ or CA pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact (UC4B).
  • Pre-drill for anchor bolts before laying on foundation.
  • Apply borate treatment to cut ends.

Erreurs courantes à éviter

  • Using non-PT lumber for sill plates — this will rot.
  • Not using correct hardware rated for pressure-treated lumber (PT-compatible fasteners).
