À propos de ce matériau

Anchor bolts (J-bolts) are L-shaped or J-shaped steel fasteners embedded in wet concrete to mechanically secure the wood sill plate to the foundation. The standard residential anchor bolt is 1/2-inch diameter by 10 inches long, with at least 7 inches of embedment. They are available in hot-dipped galvanized steel for corrosion resistance. The IRC mandates placement every 6 feet on center and within 12 inches of each board end, corner, and joint. In high-wind or seismic zones, engineers may specify 5/8-inch bolts or closer spacing. Epoxy-set retrofit anchor bolts (such as Simpson SET-XP or Hilti HIT-RE 500) are used when bolts were missed during the pour. Expect to pay $1.50 to $3.00 per bolt for standard J-bolts at most building supply stores, with retrofit epoxy anchors costing $8 to $15 each installed.

Conseils de pose

  • Set bolts before concrete sets fully, while it is still workable.
  • Use a template jig to maintain consistent spacing and alignment.
  • Ensure bolts extend at least 7 inches into concrete.
  • Place bolts within 12 inches of the end of each sill plate piece.

Erreurs courantes à éviter

  • Skipping bolts at board joints — always place one within 12" of each end.
  • Using the wrong bolt diameter — standard is 1/2" minimum.
  • Not checking plumb before concrete cures.
